Electromagnetic Induction

If an electrical conductor is moved through a magnetic field then a potential difference is induced between the ends of the conductor.

A potential difference can also be induced if a magnet is moved into (or out of) a coil of wire. No p.d. is induced if the magnet is stationary in the coil of wire.

This effect is used in generators, dynamos to generate electricity.
